  That great, tremendous day’s approaching, That awful scene is drawing nigh, Which was foretold by ancient prophets, Decreed from all eternity.   The world is very evil, the times are waxing late, Be sober and keep vigil, the Judge is at the gate. The Judge Who comes in mercy, the Judge Who comes in might, Who comes to end the evil, who comes to crown the right. Arise, arise, good Christian, let right to wrong succeed; Let penitential sorrow to heavenly gladness lead, To light that has no evening, that knows nor moon nor sun, The light so new and golden, the light that is but one. O home of fadeless splendor, of flowers that bear no thorn, Where they shall dwell as children who here as exiles mourn; ’Midst power that knows no limits, where wisdom has no bound, The beatific vision shall glad the saints around.   The chariot! the chariot! its wheels roll in fire, As the Lord cometh down in the pomp of His ire! Lo! self moving it drives on its pathway of cloud, And the heavens with the burden of Godhead are bowed. The glory! the glory! around Him are poured Mighty hosts of the angels that wait on the Lord; And the glorified saints and the martyrs are there, And there all who the palm wreaths of victory wear. The trumpet! the trumpet! the dead have all heard, Lo! the depths of the stone covered charnel are stirred; From the sea, from the earth, from the south, from the north, And the vast generations of man are come forth. The judgment! the judgment! the thrones are all set, Where the Lamb and the white vested elders are met; There all flesh is at once in the sight of the Lord, And the doom of eternity hangs on His word.   Sing to the Lord, ye heav’nly hosts, And thou, O earth, adore; Let death and hell through all their coasts Stand trembling at His power. His sounding chariot shakes the sky, He makes the clouds His throne; There all His stores of lightning lie, Till vengeance darts them down. His nostrils breathe out fiery streams And from His awful tongue A sovereign voice divides the flames, And thunder roars along. Think, O my soul! the dreadful day, When this incensèd God Shall rend the sky, and burn the sea, And fling His wrath abroad. What shall the wretch, the sinner do? He once defied the Lord; But he shall dread the Thund’rer now, And sink beneath His Word. Tempests of angry fire shall roll To blast the rebel worm, And beat upon his naked soul In one eternal storm.
